Renault Duster Overview

Renault Duster was launched in India in July 2012 following the Pulse hatchback. The truly global SUV had suspension changes and strengthened underside to increase the car’s off-roading ability and suit Indian road conditions. The Duster sparked mid-size premium SUV segment in the country and had no direct rivals in the beginning. It sailed smoothly by being the first product from such an elite category and projected the then-new Renault brand into a highly recognisable and potent manufacturer among the budget-obsessed Indian customers. It was the model responsible for the French car company’s nearly 30 awards since it commenced dedicated local production operations in Chennai and was the torch-bearer in every strategic move the company had to step foot in. Renault Duster Exterior

The Renault Duster comes with a 205 mm minimum ground clearance and measures 4,336 mm in length, 1,822 mm in width as well as 1,695 mm in height. The SUV has a fuel tank capacity of 50 litres on all variants. Higher variants in the Renault Duster is offered with 16 inch alloy wheels while the lower versions have steel rims with full wheel cover and trims all are equipped with tubeless radial tyres. All trims of the Renault Duster have body coloured bumpers, tinted glass, chrome front grille, roof rails and skid plates while the higher variants have silver coloured door handles and side sills.

Inside the cabin, the centre console has been treated with piano-black finish to enhance premium-ness and when you climb aboard the cockpit you could really feel that. The new Renault Duster receives other makeovers like updated upholstery and the new red and silver separate contrast colour touches with respective seat stitching have elevated the sportiness.The rear-view camera now displays reverse guide lines and the Air Conditioning has been upgraded for good use from the outgoing model. But for a 6 foot tall lad like me, I felt little cramped despite adjusting the steering wheel to suit my driving position and the left leg was constantly obscured while pressing the clutch pedal.

There are new power windows with anti-pinch function and an user friendly seven-inch MEDIANAV touchscreen infotainment system with navigation, voice recognition and Bluetooth connectivity. The entertainment unit was up to the standards but you can only wish the whole dashboard to have had an enlightening design rather than a conventional appearance.The top-of-the-line models are being offered with dual airbags, Anti-Lock Braking System, Electronic Brake-force Distribution, Electronic Stability Program, Creep Control and Hill Start Assist to emphasise safety on whatever the surface you drive.

Renault Duster Gearbox

The quality and able SUV’s petrol version is equipped with a 1.5 litre 4 cylinder DOHC petrol engine of 1498 cc displacement. The petrol engine produces a max power of 104.5 bhp at 5600 rpm and a peak torque of 142 Nm at 4000 rpm. This engine comes paired with either a 5-speed manual transmission or a CVT. On the other hand, the diesel version is powered by a 1.5-litre dCi engine of 1461 cc displacement and is offered in two states of tune – a 83.8 bhp of power at 3750 rpm with a peak torque of 200 Nm at 1750 rpm, and a 108.4 bhp of power at 4000 rpm with 245 Nm of torque at 1750 rpm. The tuned down diesel engine comes mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox, whereas the 108.4 bhp powered engine is offered with a 6-speed manual and an AMT, while off-road lovers can also opt for an AWD setup.

Unlike some of the counterparts, Duster uses a modern monocoque shell construction for chassis which makes it light and efficient. The Duster SUV’s 85 PS diesel version offers the fuel efficiency of up to 19.87 Kmpl, while the 110 PS version offers a mileage of around 19.64 Kmpl. On the other hand, the petrol version of the SUV delivers the fuel efficiency of up to 13.05 Kmpl. While the Diesel variant (110PS) that comes equipped with an AWD (All Wheel Drive) transmission, promises to offer the most impressive fuel efficiency of 19.72kmpl.

The power to weight ratio that the Duster offers is impressive and the engine has enough grunt to pull from any speed without straining. The gear ratios are wide and the engine has enough torque and you would not need to make frequent gear changes. At the front, the car uses Mac Pherson With Coil Spring, Stabiliser Bar & Double Acting Shock Absorber with Anti Roll Bar and at the rear, Multilink with Coil Spring & Double Acting Shock Absorber with Anti Roll Bar does its duty. Duster offers good performance on tough road conditions while also offering comfortable drive and handling on the busy city roads. The car has impressive high speed stability and feels stable at all speeds.

The vehicle comes equipped with ventilated disc brakes for its front wheels, while its rear wheels are fitted with drum brakes. The SUV range comes with many advanced safety features including ABS with EBD & rapid deceleration warning, seat belt reminder, brake assist system, engine immobilizer, rear defogger, rear washer and wiper with timer, fog lamps, hill start assist, EPS, anti slip regulation, twin airbags, rear parking sensors, etc. Some of the passive safety features that protect the occupants like speed sensing auto door locks and impact sensing auto door unlock. To protect the engine during extreme off-roading, there’s an engine guard too.

Renault Duster Conclusion

Unlike some of the cars in the compact SUV segment,the car does not have impressive interiors. The Renault Duster is a great compact SUV and is decently equipped too. What makes it unique in this category is the presence of an AWD (All Wheel Drive) transmission system and impressive ground clearance that makes it a true off-roader. You should go for the Duster if you want a car that is equally capable on-Road and off it.
