Tata Tigor Overview

Automatic transmission cars are becoming a popular choice among buyers in the entry-level segment. Once it was the forte of a much higher price bracket. But today, with growing traffic woes and a road system unable to cope with the demand, having someone else doing the shifting for you seems like a boon.That’s where the Tata Tigor in this AMT (automated manual transmission) guise comes in. It’s a two pedal version of the Indian automaker’s entry-level compact sedan and was launched here in November 2017. Tata Tigor Exterior & Style

The Tigor compact sedan underpins slightly tweaked version of the XO platform. Although the car uses the same platform, the wheelbase has been extended by 50 more mm to add the extra amount of space for the rear passengers.

Coming to its exterior styling, we must inform you all that the Tigor Styleback looks far better than any other compact sedans of the Indian market. It is quite evident that the Tigor hurriedly did not finish designing the car. It does not have any disproportionate lines towards the B-Pillar onward while the boot and the rear profile blends perfectly with the overall design quite well. The sloping roofline towards the rear of the car and that integrated roof spoiler with the stop lamps adds a premium appeal to the Styleback. The rear profile also features a wraparound split LED taillamps which look gorgeous with the Hexagonal elements in it. The lower bumper at the rear profile looks bulky which has helped in making the sedan appear slightly bigger than its sibling Tiago.

Apart from the newly done rear profile, the front and side profile gets the same treatment as seen on the Tiago hatchback. Fewer changes to the front include a smoked projector headlamp which also gets integrated LED DRL’s as well. The lower bumper houses round shaped fog lamps with chrome embellishments. The Tigor also gets Tata’s signature grille with Hexagonal detailing and Tata Motors logo at the centre; this grille can also be found in the Tiago hatchback as well. The side profile too looks identical to the hatchback with no such noticeable changes. However, it does get two different alloy wheel patterns for the petrol and diesel variants respectively.

Thus with all the changes mentioned above calling the Tata Tigor one of the most proportionate looking compact sedan’s currently available in the Indian market won’t be an understatement.

Tata Tigor Interior & Space

Step inside and you won’t notice and major changes over the Tiago. The dashboard design is exactly the same including the 3-spoke steering wheel and the instrument cluster. However, you get some more goodies in the Tigor compared to its hatchback sibling. The centre console comes with a Harman Connectnext touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth connectivity. It is being offered with Tata App Suite that lets you control the system via several apps for Navigation, Music, Emergency, Car Settings, etc. The display also doubles up as a reverse parking camera display. The touch quality isn’t great but the interface is user friendly. You also get steering mounted audio controls along with voice command system. The Tigor comes with 8 speakers and it sounds quite impressive with clear acoustics.

Another additional feature over the Tiago is the automatic climate control system which works quite well and cools the cabin effectively. The quality, fit and finish is similar to the hatch, which is quite impressive as Tata has improved their quality leaps and bounds compared to the older products. There are quite a few storage spaces to keep the cabin neat and tidy. The seats are very comfortable, specially the rear seats that have been improved in terms of padding and support. The legroom is ample at the back and you also get centre arm rest with cup holders. The boot is very accommodating with 419-litre of capacity. The best part about the boot is that you don’t get those conventional hinges that hinder the capacity and instead Tata has put hydraulic struts for optimum space in the boot. Tata Tigor Engine & Gearbox

Powering the Tata Tigor AMT is the Indian automaker’s 1.2-litre three-cylinder unit. It produces 84bhp/140Nm with power going to the front wheels via a five-speed AMT setup. This is the same box used in the Tiago AMT and its arrival in the Tigor seems like the next logical step and is pretty much at the heart of what is going on here.After driving the Tiago AMT, this definitely feels like an improvement as harshness and vibrations have reduced. The rocking movement associated with budget AMTs has reduced quite a bit but you do still feel some jerkiness when you get off the line.

There are two driving modes on offer with the Tigor AMT- City and Sport which alter the response of the throttle and gearbox accordingly. In City mode, the shifts take place at a lower RPM and it’s designed in such a way that you are always in the meat of the torque band. Go in a for a quick overtake and since it’s a mode that favours efficiency over performance, the shifts feel slow and there is significant delay between you mashing the throttle, gears dropping and the engine spinning up to give you some punch.

Things improve in the sport mode as the gearbox allows you to hold the revs for a longer period and build up more steam as required. However, once you hit redline the system automatically upshifts to the next gear. Revving the engine hard produces a nice little note and can be a nice little thing to egg you on when you want to up the pace.There’s a creep function which allows the car to inch along at slow speeds and is a useful tool for bumper-to-bumper traffic as well as a manual mode for when you want to control the shifts yourself and induce engine braking for stopping better.

Tata Tigor Driving Dynamics

The Tigor offcourse uses the same Independent, Lower Wishbone, McPherson Strut with Coil Spring towards the front and Semi-Independent; closed profile Twist beam with Dual path Strut towards the rear. The Tigor is 40-50 kilograms heavier than the hatchback and Tata Motors has reworked the suspension setup for better ride quality and handling.For stopping the Tigor compact sedan relies on disc brakes towards the front and drum brakes for the rear. The car also rides on a 155/80 R13 Steel – XE, 175/65 R14 Steel – XT and the top end gets 175/65 R14 Alloy – XZ, XZ(O) wheels and tyres.

Tata Tigor Safety & Security

Tata Motors is offering the new Tigor with dual front airbags, ABS, EBD with cornering stability control. The Tigor hasn’t been crash tested yet but the body panels and the sheet metal feels quite solid and well built, specially when you open/close the doors. Tata has a wide network across the country and with the success of the Tiago, their after sales have become much better. The Tigor is expected to offer low maintenance with reasonably priced servicing and spare parts.

Tata Tigor Verdict

The Tata Tigor AMT is available in two variants- XZA and XTA – and they are priced (at the time of writing this review) at Rs 6.47 lakhs and Rs 5.87 lakhs (Ex-showroom Delhi) respectively. The Tigor as a product is a unique offering as there are currently no other compact sedans or for that matter automatic sedans in this part of the market. It’s quite good looking and with its unique styling, it will standout out in the crowd. That being said, there are issues with plastic quality as well as lack of features like a touchscreen system as well as climate control and for a car that is priced at Rs 7.40 lakhs (on-road Delhi) it will make buyers think twice.
